Dynasty Dud?: Tua Tagovailoa

When looking at the stats from Tua’s rookie season, it’s hard to get excited about him from a fantasy perspective. The 2nd QB drafted in most dynasty rookie drafts really struggled his rookie season. With the other rookie QB’s from this class, there were some things you could point to that were promising. Burrow was top 5 in pass attempts per game, Hurts number one in rushing and Herbert of course did everything. When I look at Tua though, I see an undersized QB who was bottom 5 in the league in nearly every meaningful statistic, which includes pass attempts per game, red zone attempts per game, completion percentage, passing yards per game and rushing yards per game. His Total QBR of 58.9 ranked 26th, which is also a bad sign. Being bad in any one category isn’t great, but being this bad in this many is really concerning.

It would be understandable if the Dolphins were bad, but they were not. To everyone’s surprise, the Fins finished 10-6, which would have made the playoffs most years.

It’s still too early to write Tua off as a quality fantasy asset, but there is a large enough sample size to at least have some decent concerns as to how good he might be. He is a quarterback playing with just average offensive weapons, a bottom five offensive line according to PFF, and a defensive-minded head coach. The Dolphins do have the number 3 and 18 overall picks in this year‘s draft, so his weapons and line could improve, but given how deep the quarterback position is, not even including the incoming draft class, Tua is a player I’d be totally comfortable moving on from.

What do you all think?
