Dynasty Dud? Clyde Edwards-Helaire

Clyde Edwards-Helaire was not a player I was high on prior to the NFL Draft. Honestly, he reminded me a little bit of Devonta Freeman. Undersized and a bit slower than I'd like my running back to be. Then Patrick Mahomes, I mean the Chiefs took him in the first round and that all changed. The Andy Reid history of RB1's catapulted him to the top, and I was right there with the masses. However an underwelming rookie campaign has left a lot of us asking, "Is Clyde still an elite dynasty RB?"

Clyde's rookie statline looked like this:

13.5 points per game was not what anybody signed up for when he was being drafted as the consensus 1.01 in most dynasty drafts. He finished as the overall RB22, and the 5th best running back from this rookie class. Those who drafted him over Jonathan Taylor, D'Andre Swift, J.K. Dobbins and Cam Akers were all likely regretting using such a high pick on the former Tiger.

A whiff on Clyde's role in the passing game

I think the biggest miss we had in the fantasy community was the expectation that he would garner a lot more in the receiving game. He was going to be the Chiefs version of Christian McCaffrey or Alvin Kamara. There was a lot of talk of him catching 100 passes. Instead he was on pace for less than half of that. And it wasn't for a lack of pass volume. Patrick Mahomes was 5th in total pass attempts He just wasn't checking down to his running backs. I think that's where we all missed the mark the most. Mahomes isn't a check-down QB. He's the opposite of Drew Brees. He has the most arm talent we have ever seen and can scramble. We all should have realized that. It also didn't help that the team signed Le'Veon Bell midway through the season to lesson the rookie's workload.

What can we expect moving forward?

If I'm being honest, I don't know that I see any kind of big uptick from Clyde in 2021. I think he can finish as a back end RB1 or high end RB2, but I'm not so sure I see a Top 5 RB. My reasons are the aforementioned lack of dump off and screen passes. I just don't see it happening with Mahomes, especially with his elite downfield weapons, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. I also don't know that Clyde is big enough to handle an elite workload. The team will most likely have Damien Williams back in 2021 to split the workload.

All in all, I think Clyde is a fine running back to have on your dynasty squad. I just have my concerns that he ever lives up to the high draft capital his owners spent on him.
